SING! Toronto Vocal Arts Festival
From Sea to Sea: New Canadian Choral Works-World Premiere
May 12, 2013
2:30 PM
Harbourfront Centre
Toronto, ON
A Mari Usque Ad Mare (the Canadian motto, “From Sea to Sea”) is a 13-piece song-cycle composed by the award-winning Canadian composer, Aaron Jensen. This landmark performance will bring together the poetry of some of Canada’s most respected and celebrated poets – one per province/territory of Canada – in a collection of new choral works, performed by premiere Ontario choirs and vocal ensembles, including The Elora Festival Singers, That Choir, Countermeasure, and The SING! Singers. These compositions cover a wide range of musical genres ranging from contemporary classical choral, to lively folk melodies – from minimalistic soundscapes, to rhythmic, jazz-informed harmonic works. The thirteen pieces offer musical settings to the works of such highly-esteemed and award-winning Canadian poets as Lucy Maud Montgomery, Gwendolyn MacEwen, Robert Service, The Hon. Herménégilde Chiasson, Christian Bök, Lorna Crozier, Shane Koyczan, and Sylvia Legris. This new works project was created through the support of the Toronto Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council.
